PORTRAITS

Why get a portrait?

Getting a portrait painted of yourself is fun, rewarding, relaxing, and worthwhile. I will work with you to create a piece of art that will express yourself better than any photo.  The portrait will capture your personality on the canvas.

The portrait will be a family heirloom that will be passed down through the generations. The process of getting a portrait done can be relaxation therapy and something you do just for yourself. Also, it should represent your essence in a flattering way and you and your family will prize it as a luxurious, priceless piece of art.

Where is the portrait painted?

The portrait work is done in my artist’s studio. It has been recently renovated with two large skylights facing north for optimum lighting. It has a private bathroom and kitchen. (Keep in mind that it’s on the second floor, up a few stairs.)

For off-site portraits, extra expenses may be required and will be discussed beforehand.

How the portrait is made?

  • preliminary photos and sketches are done to determine the best angle, pose, background, outfit to be used. This is a joint decision between us.
  • It is best to do a portrait with as much live posing as possible but adjustments can be done using photos.
  • All photos used in the process must have been done by me while you are posing. This is important since my attention to all the details is needed.

How to sit still?

It’s not difficult to pose since I set up your viewing space with DVDs, audio books, or other entertainment that will keep your mind occupied while you are sitting still. There are many options for comfortable seating.

How much time does it take?

Each portrait takes several sessions; each session lasts a few hours (including numerous breaks for snacks and stretching). The timing of each session will be worked out with you to fit your schedule.

Where to hang the portrait?

The painting can be hung in whatever room you desire.  The background, tone, and colouring can be designed to coordinated with the surroundings. This piece can be a striking addition to any formal or informal living space.

How much does it cost?

Each portrait is quoted based on time, complexity, size and other factors. Before beginning a portrait, I will discuss the details with you and quote a price. A contract is signed before the portrait begins.

Sketch #1

We decide to go with sketch #1 after trying different angles and lighting.

Sketch #2

Sketch #3

After sketching and working together to find the best light and pose for the painting, I paint a quick colour study. Then I draw your portrait on the canvas before using paint. This is the first layer of paint.

This is after further studying the face.

Getting the colours right
